Conservation & Development Councils 2009 Rural Firefighter $500 Scholarship
The James Jordan Rural Firefighter Scholarship was
established to offer educational opportunities to our rural firefighters and
their families. James Jordan, of Monticello, has been in public service at the
local, state and national level all of his adult life. His commitment to his
constituents led to the establishment of the Rural Fire Protection Program which
has benefited communities statewide.
The 2009 essay topic is:
Finding and Keeping Volunteer Firefighters
Write a minimum 500 word essay describing how well your Local
Volunteer Fire Department is doing on manpower. Volunteerism is down throughout
the nation. Are more Volunteers needed for your Fire Department? What is being
done locally to successfully find and keep Volunteers? What suggestions would
you make to attract more Volunteers? Why should someone take their time to help
the Fire Department and Community? Should something change at the state level to
assist with Volunteerism?
The $500 scholarship is payable to a 2-year or 4-year college or university
in Arkansas.
The rules are as follows:
- Student must be a resident of the State of Arkansas
- Eligibility criteria
1. Firefighter – Must be an active volunteer firefighter 18 or older
2. Spouse of a volunteer firefighter
3. Child of a volunteer firefighter (Ages 17-24 years)
- Minimum 2.5 GPA. Copy of cumulative transcript must be provided
- You must carry a minimum of 12 credit hours for each of the next two
semesters
- Entry form must be completed and signed by all parties
- Minimum 500 word essay on the topic listed above
- Three letters of recommendation
Deadline:
Completed original entry form, essay and letters of recommendation must be
received no later than 5:00pm, March 16, 2009 at the AARC&D State Office.
Faxed copies will not be accepted.
